1) REMEMBER OCTOBER IS NATIONAL SEAFOOD MONTH!!!
2) Increasing demand & prices for Live Lobsters have lobstermen in Maine experiencing a financial windfall. Meanwhile lobstermen in Prince Edward Island are getting even more for their product.
3) Seafood Watch is reviewing the positive effects that aquaculture & fishing have on climate change & believe that the lower carbon emitting impact in relation to beef & other animal raising industries is something to promote.
4) The 2015 Bering Sea Snow Crab quota was cut 27 million lbs or 40% compared to 2014 by the Alaskan Department of Fish & Game. The new quota is 40.6 million lbs compared to 68 million in 2014/15. An overall decline in the mature biomass for Oplio & Red King Crab was the reason given for the cuts. The season will start at noon on Oct 15, 2015 & go until May 15, 2016 in the Eastern Sub district & May 31, 2015 in the Western half.
5) Salmon-as the Alaskan Coho season winds down, indications are the 2015 season will go down as the 2nd highest by volume, with over 256 million fish harvested. The Winter Troll Season started in SE Alaskan waters on Sunday Oct 11th. Smaller quantities are expected to be landed along the Washington State coast, a limited amount of Kings are also being landed in the Columbia River.
6) The Coast Rican government is the most recent to sign & agree to the UN Food & Agriculture Organization’s commitment to combating Illegal, Unreported & Unregulated (IUU) fishing.
7) This week’s recent weather pattern has been favorable for East Coast landings in the Atlantic. We have been receiving Swordfish, Mako Shark, Albacore Tuna, Sea Scallops, Fluke, Flounder, Striped Bass, Monkfish, Bluefish, Skate, Tilefish, Lobsters, Clams, Mussels, Oysters & even some Blowfish.
8) Peru’s Marine Institute is expected to cancel the 2nd Anchovy season after studies show reduce stock due to the El Nino. The study showed a biomass of 3 Metric Tons (MT) compared to the usual 5 MT for this time of the year. Many of these Anchovies go to Chile for salmon farming.
9) The Marine Stewardship Council MSC is celebrating their 15th year anniversary. A recent study done by MSC states that 45% of all Global Whitefish harvested is certified. Also Cod from the North Sea fishery has been removed from its avoid list because of recent efforts to protect this highly regarded & valuable specie.
10) Long Line Fish-availability will tighten due to the moon entering the New Moon Phase on Oct 13th, look for this situation to change with the Full Moon occurring on Oct 27th. Quality is very good, prices are stable based on good weather & low demand.
11) Availability of Wild Caught, Alaskan Halibuts have really tightened up on limited supplies.
12) Domestic Gulf Shrimp-the National Marine Fisheries Services has reported August 2015 landings totaled close to 20 million lbs, compared to almost 19 million in 2014. YTD totals are approximately 60 million lbs, roughly 1.6% about last year.
13) The fresh Florida Stone Crab Claw season is scheduled to get underway Thursday Oct 15th & runs through May 15th; typically asking prices open very high. The majority are harvested off the Southern tip of Florida’s peninsula, from the Panhandle to Key West. In adults, typically it takes 3 molts (3 years) for the claw to regain 95% of its original size.
14) Norway, which is most associated with the Salmon industry is actually home to the largest Cod & Haddock fisheries in the world. The MSC has recertified both for being an environmentally responsible, sustainably managed fishery.
15) Shellfish-Lobsters, Hard-shell Crabs, Oysters, Mussels, Littlenecks & Toppnecks are readily available. Middlenecks remain very limited, while Cherrystone & Chowder availability is basically day to day. Maine Mahogany Clams & New Zealand Cockles are usually available with a 2 day lead time.
